The Cleveland Cavaliers signed Thomas Bryant last September to bolster their big man room with Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, and Larry Nance Jr. Bryant had been coming off a heartbreaking NBA Finals run with the Indiana Pacers, where he played a critical part in huge moments along the way. He was going to be in a battle with Larry Nance Jr. for Cleveland's backup frontcourt minutes, and Bryant ended up beating him out. Providing the rebounding, force, and physical presence as advertised, the 28-year-old sparked the second unit on several occasions throughout the season. In the five games where he suited up for at least 20 minutes, Bryant averaged 12.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists on 84.7% True Shooting. He also recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double with two assists and a block in his lone start against his former Indiana team on April 5. The Cavs didn't turn to Bryant during the playoffs much, topping out at just under 10 minutes in Game 1 against the Detroit Pistons. Before seeing most of those minutes in the Cavs' final game of the year in blowout fashion, the veteran was a pedestrian 2-of-14 from the field and collected just eight rebounds in total. Bryant's regular season stats were 6.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game, while his playoff stats were 1.9 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 0.2 assists per game. With his one-year contract expiring, it's likely that Bryant won't be back with the Cavaliers next season. The team will need to find a way to improve their big man situation and help Allen and Mobley. The Cavaliers have to make some moves in free agency to strengthen their frontcourt. Thomas Bryant's performance was a positive note in an otherwise disappointing season for the Cavaliers. He showed that he can still be a valuable contributor off the bench, and his experience and championship pedigree make him an attractive option for other teams. As the Cavaliers look to rebuild and improve their roster, they will need to consider how to replace Bryant's production and find a new reserve big man who can provide similar energy and rebounding ability.
